Christmas feelings have started in New York City some weeks ago. Together with the special events, fairs and ice rinks, there are the traditional holiday windows in the city’s most famous stores. There is so much investment and expectations created around those windows, that some have even become tourist attractions. In order to draw the attention of both customers and the press, some of the stores have created events to reveal those windows with artistic performances and fireworks. Today, I will show you the holiday windows for Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue, which are two of the most luxurious department stores in NY. I would also recommend you to check the holiday windows at Barneys, Bloomingdale’s, Tiffany & Co. and Lord & Taylor. // Já fazem algumas semanas que os preparativos para o Natal começaram em Nova York. E as tão esperadas vitrines de festas das principais lojas de departamento da cidade já estão à postos! O investimento e divulgação são tão grandes que algumas dessas vitrines se tornam atrações turísticas. A época de festas pode ser curta, mas a lucratividade é grande! A maioria das lojas fazem inclusive eventos de abertura das suas vitrines, com direito a performances artísticas e fogos de artifícios. Meu foco hoje é na Bergdorf Goodman e na Saks Fifth Avenue, duas das lojas de departamento mais luxuosas da cidade. Obs: vale conferir também as vitrines da Barneys, Bloomigdale’s, Tiffany & Co. e Lord & Taylor.

Starting with Bergdorf Goodman (5th avenue and 58th street), the theme chosen was: “Inspired – Celebrating the Arts”. The windows created by David Hoey are a tribute to the different types of arts, including literature, architecture, theatre, painting, music, dance, sculpture and film, among others. Each window was created around its art and each one has a determined color, or type of material that was used. Even though they are completely different, the unit and harmony of its designs are unquestionable. The amount of details is incredible! Just for you to have an idea the literature window was entirely made of fabric, soft sculpture and needlework and the architecture window was made of paper and blueprints. There were more than 100 artists involved and almost one year of work to prepare the windows. I also appreciated the fact that Bergdorf Goodman chose to display and incorporate merchandise in all the windows. After all, the final objective is to attract customer’s attention and desire to buy at the store, right? // Começando pela Bergdorf Goodman (5th avenue and 58th street), o tema escolhido para esse ano foi: “Inpiração – celebrando as artes”. As vitrines, criadas por David Hoey, são uma homenagem aos diversos tipos de artes: literatura, arquitetura, teatro, pintura, música, dança, escultura, cinema etc. Cada vitrine foi criada em cima do seu tema, sempre com a predominância de uma determinada cor ou forma e usando materiais específicos. Apesar de serem completamente diferentes, a unidade e harmonia no design de todas é indiscutível. O nível de detalhes é impressionante! Só para vocês terem uma ideia, a vitrine de literatura foi inteira construída com tecidos, esculturas de pelucia e bordados feitos à mão e a de arquitetura toda feita em papel. Foram mais de 100 artistas envolvidos na produção e quase um ano de trabalho. Outro fato que gostei foi a incorporação de produtos vendidos na loja em todas as vitrines. Afinal, o objetivo todo é despertar o interesse e desejo nos consumidores, certo?

On the other hand, Saks Fifth Avenue (5th avenue and 49th street) chose “An Enchanted Experience” as their theme for the holiday windows. There were created 6 windows with iconic fairytales in a magical New York setting. The fairytales chosen were: The Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin, Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. The other windows around the store are beautiful scenarios based on the 20’s with shining gowns and lingerie. The holiday windows unveiling event at Saks had a presentation of the Rockettes, light effects and fireworks, delighting hundreds of people that went to the occasion. Even though the fairytale displays are very well executed, with a lot of technology, movement and animation, no merchandise was incorporated. Not even Cinderella’s designer shoe was real. It had a “Disney World feeling” for me. Then, the windows that are displaying real products, don’t tell the same story. It looks like it is two different stores. What do you think? // A Saks Fifth Avenue (5th avenue and 49th street), por sua vez, escolheu como tema clássicos de contos de fadas adaptados ao cenário nova-iorquino. Foram criadas 6 vitrines lindíssimas e dignas de Disney, incluindo movimento, muitos detalhes e cores. Os contos escolhidos foram: Branca de Neve, Bela Adormecida, Rumpelstiltskin, Chapéuzinho Vermelho, Rapunzel e Cinderela. As outras vitrines que rodeiam a loja são uma releitura da década de 1920, com vestidos de festa cheios de brilho! A festa de abertura das vitrines da Saks teve apresentação das Rockettes, show de luzes e fogos de artifício, não decepcionando as centenas de pessoas presentes. Apesar das vitrines principais serem muito bem feitas, não foi usado nenhum produto da loja. Nem o sapato da Cinderela era de verdade. As outras vitrines que foram montadas com roupas, sapatos e acessórios reais não complementam a história dos contos de fadas, fazendo parecer que se tratam de lojas diferentes. O que acham?
