To the book lovers that still enjoy reading in paper and get lost in libraries and bookstores (like me), today’s post was made for you! I will introduce you to some of my favorite places to buy or just admire books In New York City. // Aos amantes da leitura, que ainda curtem ler um livro no papel e se perder em livrarias e bibliotecas (como eu), este post é para você! Hoje vou mostrar alguns dos meus lugares favoritos para se comprar, ou apenas admirar livros em Nova York.
Shakespeare & Co. Booksellers
The first place is Shakespeare & Co. Booksellers (939 Lexington Avenue, between 68th and 69th streets). The original Shakespeare is located in Paris and it is already part of the touristic attractions of the city. This bookstore is famous for being a place where famous writers would go to make researches, meetings or just spend their time there. As it couldn’t be different, Shakespeare & Co. also has a store in NYC. It is an “oldstyle” kind of bookstore, not too big, very organized and with the walls full of books. It is a great place to get lost and explore the books, especially in cold and rainy days. They also have a great collection of NYC books, guides and gifts, like calendars, agendas, cards, among others. // O primeiro é a Shakespeare & Co. Booksellers (939 Lexington Avenue entre as ruas 68 e 69). A Shakespeare “original” fica em Paris e é quase um ponto turístico da cidade. A livraria é famosa por ter sido, e ainda ser, um lugar aonde escritores renomados se reúnem, fazem pesquisas ou apenas passam o tempo. Como não podia deixar de ser, a Shakespeare & Co. tem a sua filial em Nova York. É uma livraria no estilo mais tradicional, pequena, aconchegante e completamente lotada de livros. É um ótimo lugar para se distrair em dias frios e de chuva. Também muito legal para comprar presentinhos de NY. Tem vários livros sobre a cidade, cartões com capas da New Yorker, calendários e por ai vai.

The other nice bookstore to go is BookMarc (400 Bleecker Street) that, as Shakespeare’s, also has a location in Paris. The NY BookMarc is located in the charming West Village and it is the Marc Jacobs bookstore. The concept is a little bit different from the other bookplaces. It is very small and the focus is on art, photography and fashion books. They also have some Marc Jacobs accessories, like bags, phone and computer cases, keychains, wallets, etc. Around BookMarc you can find all the other Marc Jacobs stores (ready-to-wear, men’s, children, cosmetics, etc.). The street should be called Marc Jacobs as well… For the brand’s fans this is the place to be! // Outra livraria bem legal de se conhecer é a BookMarc (400 Bleecker Street) que, diga-se de passagem, também tem uma filial em Paris. Além de ficar no super charmoso e descolado bairro do West Village, a BookMarc é a livraria do Marc Jacobs. É um conceito de livraria um tanto diferente. Ela é bem pequena, tendo como foco livros de moda, fotografia e arte, além de alguns acessórios e objetos da marca. Em volta da livraria você encontra as lojas de todas as linhas do Marc Jacobs. A ready-to-wear, a masculina, a infantil, a de cosméticos e por ai vai. Resumindo, o nome da rua deveria ser: Marc Jacobs! Para os fãs da marca, esta é uma parada obrigatória.
And last, but no least, there is my “secret” place to buy books here: Book-Off, even though it is not hidden at all… Book-Off is located at 45th street between 5th and 6th avenues. There you can find a great collection of used books, cd’s, dvd’s, videogames and Japanese comic books, among others. Everything is in perfect conditions and the prices are unbelievable! Books for $1, Dvd’s for $2,50 and that is how it goes. They also buy or trade your books for store credits. For the non-native speakers, that is the perfect place to buy that book to practice your English. I would recommend Mary Higgins Clark’s books, that are in Agatha Christie’s style and the vocabulary is easy to understand! // Por fim, o lugar que considero o meu maior “segredo” para comprar livros: a Book-Off, que nada mais é do que um sebo. Mas esqueça a imagem de livros caindo aos pedaços e apenas “velharias”. Lá você encontra livros, cd’s, dvd’s, jogos de videogame e mangas por preços incríveis e em perfeito estado! Pensem em livros por 1 dólar, dvd’s por 2,50 e por ai vai. Eles também compram seus livros, dvd’s e afins usados. É um ótimo lugar para encontrar aquele livro para treinar o seu inglês. Aliás, indico os livros da Mary Higgins Clark para esse fim (no estilo Agatha Christie e com vocabulário tranquilo de acompanhar). A Book-Off fica do lado da Jack’s 99 na Rua 45, entre a 5a e a 6a avenidas.

Obs: I did not cite Barnes&Noble, which is the big bookstore chain here in NY, because it is already very known. I just have one tip about them: always check their calendar of events. They have book signings every week and many times with famous authors! Only during this last semester I got to meet and have my books signed by Ken Follett and Diane Von Furstenberg! // Obs: não citei aqui a Barnes&Noble, que é a gigante dos livros aqui, por já ser bastante conhecida. Mas fica a dica para acompanharem sempre o calendário de eventos da loja, eles sempre tem autores lançando e autografando livros. Esse ano já consegui uma cópia autografada do livro do Ken Follett e da Diane Von Furstenberg.
